Hillcrest School Gymnasium Project
Jos, Nigeria
Hillcrest School is an eight-mission cooperative Christian school with a student body of 270. Physical education is an important part of the curriculum and a vital ingredient in a holistic Christian education. The current gymnasium facility is too small for the physical education classes and other athletic events and programs. The small size of the building prohibits holding the ideal number of physical education classes simultaneously, as well as sports events open to the parents and public. In addition, the roof leaks, so during the rainy season it is impossible to conduct classes and programs in this building. During the rainy season these outside courts are not useable for activities and during the dry season the lack of shade for physical education activities causes sunburn problems for many children.
This project would be a single-span aluminum roof to cover the existing two multipurpose courts (basketball, volleyball, and tennis), dirt elementary school soccer field, and bleacher areas. It would be only partially enclosed on the sides and ends. This facility would meet the need for a larger covered all-season physical education area.
The erection of a roof over the existing physical education courts would improve all the programs that we are able to offer the students and provide a healthier and safer environment. It would also give us more opportunities to reach out to the community through evangelistic sports events and other school social events that would both improve our relationship with the community and improve the community itself.
The school has approved this project but is unable to finance it without outside donations and gifts. This will be sought locally through community awareness and internationally through communication with alumni, friends of the school, and Christian sports and athletic organizations and ministries.
Total cost of project: $272,110
Hillcrest School has a nonprofit NGO in the United States called Hillcrest School Foundation to which gifts may be sent. For more details contact hillcrestschool@yahoo.com.
