Introduction

The National Honor Society is an American organization for recognizing outstanding students. Members are inducted at the end of each school year.

Purpose

The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in all students.

Membership in the Hillcrest Chapter of the National Honor Society

Members of NHS are expected to maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and to continue to display proper behavior and attitudes in the areas of Service, Leadership, and Character, and to participate in the activities of the chapter.

Eligibility

  • Only Juniors and Seniors can be elected for membership in NHS. An active member of NHS who transfers to Hillcrest will be automatically accepted into the Hillcrest chapter.
  • Candidates are eligible for selection after completion of their Sophomore (grade 10) or Junior year.
  • Membership is based on Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.

Scholarship Requirements

  • Candidates must be second semester sophomores or juniors and have a cumulative GPA of 3.33 or higher.

Service Requirements

  • Puts service to others above self-interest. Gives time, efforts, talents, not for personal gain but for the class, group, school, or community
  • Performs committee work by request or by volunteering
  • Demonstrates courtesy and concern to teachers, students and visitors
  • Represents the school in various types of competition or performance
  • Renders service to the community

Leadership Requirements

  • Takes a constructive lead in the classroom, homeroom, club or other groups
  • Contributes ideas which serve to improve the school
  • Promotes worthwhile school activities
  • Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility
  • Demonstrates a good influence on others
  • Shows initiative in studies and activities

Character Requirements

  • Meets promptly individual pledges and responsibilities to the school, teachers, administrators and the community
  • Demonstrates the highest standards of attitude concerning honesty, responsibility and fairness
  • Willingly abides with school regulations concerning attendance and all school property
  • Helps create a good attitude toward the school
  • Upholds principles of morality and ethics
